Cognitively Guided Instruction

Vincent van Gogh once said, "I dream of painting and then I paint my dream."

In this picture students are looking for mathematical patterns in Van Gogh's famous "Starry Night."  

This activity: “What Do You Notice?” presents activity practice in CGI.  Cognitively Guided Instruction  is based on research investigating the development of children's mathematical thinking.  Simply put, it helps kids identify and solve real-world problems.

 In our classrooms we practice CGI and the kiddos are loving it! The math problems at times are quite rigorous, but by using their personal strategies and knowledge our students are able to successfully find answers.

Number sense routines within CGI are engaging and help students understand math. "How Many Ways?" lets students identify different ways to make a specific number.  Other activities include presenting "Unpacking" story word problems, Number Talks, and "Which One Doesn't Belong?"
